Canada continues to face labour shortages, as employers looked to fill close to a million (959,600) job vacancies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">A job is defined as vacant if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">A specific position exists;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Work could start within 30 days; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">The employer is actively looking for workers from outside the organization to fill the position.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Though down 3.3% from the record-high number (993,200) of vacant positions seen at the start of the year, the need for labour remains elevated. Canada had 1.1 persons per job vacancy, in the third quarter of 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Average wages increase as employers look to attract more workers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Faced with a tight labour market, and increased difficulty hiring, many employers have looked to increase the offered wages of vacant positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Compared with the same quarter a year earlier, the average offered hourly wage increased by 7.5% to $24.20 per hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Some in-demand\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/en\/subjects\/standard\/noc\/2021\/introductionV1#:~:text=NOC%202021%20Version%201.0%20Broad%20Occupational%20Categories\">occupation categories<\/a>\u00a0experienced increases in offered wages even higher than the national average, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Middle management in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3VD.pl?Function=getVD&amp;TVD=122372&amp;CVD=122373&amp;CPV=7&amp;CST=01012011&amp;CLV=1&amp;MLV=4\">trades, transportation, production, and utilities<\/a>\u00a0(+10.8% to $41.40 an hour);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Assisting occupations in support of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3VD.pl?Function=getVD&amp;TVD=314243&amp;CVD=314244&amp;CPV=3&amp;CST=01012016&amp;CLV=1&amp;MLV=4\">health services<\/a>\u00a0(+10.7% to $22.45 an hour);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Assemblers in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3VD.pl?Function=getVD&amp;TVD=314243&amp;CVD=314244&amp;CPV=9&amp;CST=01012016&amp;CLV=1&amp;MLV=4\">manufacturing<\/a>\u00a0(+10.4% to 20.05 an hour); and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3VD.pl?Function=getVD&amp;TVD=314243&amp;CVD=314244&amp;CPV=9&amp;CST=01012016&amp;CLV=1&amp;MLV=4\">Processing and manufacturing<\/a>\u00a0machine operators and related production workers (+10.2% to $20.02 an hour).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Simultaneously, the average hourly wages of all workers rose by 5.3% in the same period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>This news was obtained from\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">www.cicnews.com<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Which sectors have high job vacancies in Canada?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Most notably, Canada reached a new record high of job vacancies in the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3VD.pl?Function=getVD&amp;TVD=118464&amp;CVD=118465&amp;CPV=62&amp;CST=01012012&amp;CLV=1&amp;MLV=5\">healthcare and social assistance sector<\/a>. Over 150,100 positions were unfilled in the third quarter of 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">The demand for more healthcare workers has been persistent since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic;<a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/ircc.html\">\u00a0Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada<\/a>\u00a0(IRCC) has responded by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2022\/10\/canada-removing-barriers-to-permanent-residence-for-physicians-1031184.html#gs.lko7be\">removing barriers to permanent residence for physicians<\/a>\u00a0and investing millions into streamlining\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2022\/12\/canada-takes-aim-at-healthcare-accreditation-amongst-historic-labour-shortages-1232182.html#gs.lko8s4\">accreditation of foreign-educated healthcare professionals<\/a>\u2014as Canada looks to address this historic labour shortage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Other industries that saw a notable number of vacancies included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3VD.pl?Function=getVD&amp;TVD=118464&amp;CVD=118465&amp;CPV=72&amp;CST=01012012&amp;CLV=1&amp;MLV=5\">Accommodation and food services<\/a>, with 140,000 job vacancies;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3VD.pl?CLV=1&amp;CPV=23&amp;CST=01012012&amp;CVD=118465&amp;Function=getVD&amp;MLV=5&amp;TVD=118464\">Construction<\/a>, which saw its own historic high of 81,000 vacant positions; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3VD.pl?CLV=1&amp;CPV=54&amp;CST=01012012&amp;CVD=118465&amp;Function=getVD&amp;MLV=5&amp;TVD=118464\">Professional scientific and technical services<\/a>\u00a0with 63,100 job vacancies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Which provinces have the most job vacancies?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Though job vacancies remain high across Canada, certain provinces have had more growth in the number of open positions than others in Q3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Manitoba and Saskatchewan both saw an increase in job vacancies in Q3 of 10.7% and 7.5% respectively. The considerable percentage increase from quarter to quarter, is again telling of the need for labour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Simultaneously, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia all saw decreases in the number of job vacancies as compared to the second quarter of 2022. Despite this decrease job vacancies continue to be high across Canada:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">British Columbia: 155,400 vacancies;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Manitoba: 32,400 vacancies;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Ontario: 364,000 vacancies;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Quebec: 232,400 vacancies;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Saskatchewan: 24,300 vacancies;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Alberta: 103,380 vacancies*;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">New Brunswick: 16,430 vacancies*;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Newfoundland and Labrador: 8,185 vacancies*;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Northwest Territories: 1,820 vacancies*;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Nova Scotia: 22,960 vacancies*;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Nunavut: 405 vacancies*; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Prince Edward Island: 4,090 vacancies*;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Yukon: 1,720 vacancies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">*Not seasonally adjusted figures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">British Columbia and Quebec also continued to have the highest job vacancy rate (the proportion of vacant positions to total labour demand (vacant and occupied positions)), at 6.2% and 5.8% respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">A look forward<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">As Canada looks to address labour shortages, immigration becomes a forefront concern for the government.
