These newcomers will need to apply directly to Immigra<span style=\"color: #000000;\">tion Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to extend their stay in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Newcomers attempting to flagpole for a Canadian\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/working-in-canada.html\"><strong>work<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canadian-temporary-study-visa.html\"><strong>study permit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will be turned away and told to submit their application directly to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/ircc.html\"><strong>IRCC<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>unless they are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Citizens or lawful Permanent Residents of the United States of America;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Professionals and technicians arriving in Canada under\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canada-foreign-trades-lmia-exempt-work-permit.html\"><strong>free trade agreements<\/strong><\/a>(FTAs) with the United States\/Mexico, Chile, Panama, Peru, Colombia or South Korea;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spouses or common law partners of professionals and technicians under FTAs with Panama, Columbia or South Korea;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">International truck drivers who hold a work permit, and are required to depart Canada for the purpose of their employment, and who have held maintained status as a result of applying for renewal prior to departure; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Individuals who have a pre-existing appointment with the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/cbsa.html\"><strong>Canadian Border Services Agency<\/strong><\/a>(CBSA) for permit processing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2024\/12\/flagpoling-set-to-end-as-ircc-tightens-border-security-marc-miller-1249662.html\"><strong>December 17<\/strong><\/a>, Immigration Minister\u00a0<strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canadas-immigration-minister.html\">Marc Miller<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0announced in a televised speech that the immigration department intended to ban the practice of flagpoling \u201cas soon as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">IRCC and CBSA have cited the use of \u201csignificant resources\u201d at the border as a key reason for this change\u2014including the added burden put on Canadian and American border officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the CBSA, between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, they have processed over 69,300 flagpolers across Canada, mostly at ports of entry in the pacific, southern Ontario, and Quebec regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Minister Miller also emphasized the importance of Canada-U.S. relations and border security in making this change:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cA strong Canada-U.S. relationship keeps people and goods moving safely while protecting both sides of the border&#8230;. This change will ease border congestion, improve fairness for applicants, and enhance the efficiency and security of our borders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What is flagpoling?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flagpoling is a process wherein newcomers could bypass the typical wait times for online work or study permit applications, by leaving Canada and re-entering immediately.
