Unseen pitfalls when choosing between them

Applicants often assume every PNP stream feeds into Express Entry and gets the fast 6-month federal timeline; many provincial "base" or paper-based nominations route outside Express Entry and can add 12-22 months at the federal stage on top of the provincial wait. A second overlooked issue is double-counting speed: getting nominated does not itself grant PR — it only adds 600 CRS points (functionally guaranteeing an ITA) or starts a separate provincial-then-federal queue, so the true end-to-end timeline must add both stages together, not just the faster one quoted in marketing material.

How to choose

Calculate your CRS score first: if it is regularly landing above recent cutoffs, Express Entry alone is usually faster and cheaper since it avoids a second application and provincial fee. If your score is below the cutoff, or you have a job offer, family, or work history tied to a specific province, look at that province's PNP streams — but confirm whether the specific stream is "enhanced" (aligned to Express Entry, faster federal processing) or a "base"/non-Express Entry stream (slower, separate paper application) before assuming any speed advantage.
