| Factor | Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) | Express Entry |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility basis | Ontario job offer or in-demand profile plus provincial nomination (Workforce Priority stream as of mid-2026) | CRS points under federal FSW/CEC/FST criteria, no provincial link required |
| Typical processing time | Roughly 60-150 days for OINP nomination decision, then federal PR processing after | About 6-8 months total after ITA, no separate provincial stage |
| Government fees | Federal PR fees apply, plus a separate Ontario application fee | Federal PR fees only: $1,590 incl. RPRF (or $990 deferred), $85 biometrics |
| Outcome | Permanent residence (nomination adds 600 CRS points if Express Entry-linked) | Permanent residence |
| Best fit for | Candidates with an Ontario job offer or below the general CRS cutoff | Candidates with a competitive CRS score and no need for provincial backing |

Unseen pitfalls when choosing between them
Ontario overhauled its nominee streams in 2026 — prior Human Capital Priorities and Skilled Trades streams closed on June 26, 2026 and were replaced by the Ontario Workforce Priority stream, which generally requires a qualifying Ontario job offer; applicants relying on older program descriptions may be researching a stream that no longer accepts applications. A second pitfall is assuming a provincial nomination is itself PR — it is not; a nomination through the Express Entry-linked stream adds 600 points (functionally guaranteeing an ITA), but the applicant still must clear federal PR processing afterward, and if the OINP stream used is not Express Entry-aligned, the federal stage can take far longer than the federal-only path.
How to choose
If your CRS score is already competitive on its own, applying through Express Entry alone avoids the extra provincial application, fee, and processing stage. If your score is below recent cutoffs, or you already have a genuine Ontario job offer, check the current Ontario Workforce Priority stream requirements directly on ontario.ca, since the province's streams changed substantially in 2026 and older comparisons may no longer reflect what is actually open.
