Canada announced 2026 Express Entry categories

What changed

Category-based selection was introduced in 2023 as an addition to standard Express Entry draws, letting IRCC invite candidates from targeted pools tied to specific occupations, French-language ability, or other attributes rather than relying only on overall Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. For the 2026 selection cycle, IRCC widened that list. Five new categories were added: medical doctors with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport occupations, and skilled candidates with a job offer from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Five categories already in use were carried forward for 2026: French-language proficiency, health care and social services occupations, education occupations, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations, and trade occupations. The agriculture and agri-food occupations category, which had appeared on the 2025 list, was not renewed for 2026. Alongside the new categories, IRCC increased the minimum qualifying work experience for most categories to twelve months of full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience.

Why it matters

Category-based rounds often invite candidates at lower CRS thresholds than general draws, so qualifying for a named category can open the door to an invitation that would otherwise be out of reach based on CRS score alone. Adding categories for physicians, researchers, senior managers, transport workers, and military-affiliated applicants means people in those fields who were not previously prioritized now have a more direct route into a targeted round.

At the same time, the list is not fixed from year to year. Agriculture and agri-food was dropped for 2026 after appearing the year before, a reminder that category draws are a policy tool IRCC adjusts annually, not a permanent feature any one occupation can count on indefinitely.

What this means for your application

If your occupation or profile fits one of the categories, make sure your Express Entry profile reflects it accurately, including the correct National Occupational Classification (NOC) code and documentation showing at least twelve months of qualifying experience. Being invited in a category-based round does not remove any of the usual steps in an Express Entry application: a complete profile, supporting documentation, and standard admissibility, security, and medical requirements all still apply.

Because the mix of categories has changed in each of the last few cycles, it is worth reviewing your profile against the current list periodically, and worth getting a professional assessment of which category, if any, best fits your specific work history.
